Where is Nepal?

Where is Nepal?

Nepal is a relatively small landlocked country, which is the equivalent in size of the state of Florida in the USA. Nepal borders with the Tibet Autonomous Region of The People’s Republic of China in the North, and the Indian territories of Sikkim and West Bengal to the East, and by the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to the South and West. Nepal is a sovereign Independent Kingdom. It lies between the longitude of 80 degrees 12’ east and 2 degrees 22’ and 30 degree 27’ latitude, and is 147,181 square kilometers.

Nepal lies in the temperate zone, but its climate varies dramatically due to the huge range in altitude across the country. The country is probably most famous for its altitude as it contains the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, which stands at an impressive 8,850m. However, it isn’t just Everest that Nepal can boast about as the country contains several mountains, which are taller than 8,000m. It has been said that if you could take Nepal off the face of the earth and flattened out it would in fact be larger than the whole of the USA.

The country can be divided into three main regions geographically. The Himalayan region has an altitude range between 4877 meters and 8848 meters. The mountain region covers about 64% of Nepal’s total land area, and has a maximum altitude of 4877 meters. This area is incredibly beautiful, consisting of lakes and valleys. It is home to Nepal’s ethnic people, probably as a result of the favorable climate. Today it homes around 45% of Nepal’s population. The final region is the Terai region. This is a relatively low lying area with a maximum altitude of 305 meters. This low lying area covers about 17% of the country, with Kechanakawal being the lowest lying point. It is an extension of the Gangetic plains of India. This southern area is mainly forested and cultivated now. Up until the 1950’s it was an area of heavily malarial sub-tropical forest inhabited by animals such as the Royal Bengal Tiger, leopard, wild boar, deer and even rhino, crocodiles and elephants. Since the eradication of malaria in the 1960s the area has become incredibly popular for farming. Today, around 48% of Nepal’s population live in this area.

The elevation range within the country, ranging from less than 100 meters above sea level to 8,850m, occurs within a distance of about 150km. It is this small distance that leads to such dramatic differences in climatic conditions, ranging from arctic to sub-tropical. This provides the country with a very interesting bio-diversity. Although it occupies just 0.1% of the earth Nepal contains 8% of the world’s population of birds, more than 848 different species, which is incredible for such a small country. It has 11 of the world’s 15 species of butterflies, 319 species of exotic orchids, 600 indigenous plant families, 2% of all the flowering plant species in the world and 4% of the mammal species.

The capital of Nepal is Kathmandu, and is also the country’s largest urban area with a population of 975,453, lying at an elevation of 1,400 meters.
